Moxa Demonstrates Together With Intel and PORT Game-changing Solution for Next-level Time-sensitive Networking (TSN)

MOXA- INTEL-PORT Coop

Joint Collaboration Between Moxa, Intel and port GmbH to Advance Deterministic Network Communication Over Standard Ethernet

Halle-Saale, Germany // Taipei, Taiwan, December 14, 2021— Moxa Inc. today announced a collaboration with Intel Corporation and port industrial automation GmbH to develop a platform that demonstrates the industry’s first ready-to-use, application-to-application solution of time-sensitive networking (TSN). The solution combines Gigabit bandwidth and high performance, as well as enhanced reliability and security. The joint demonstration by an ideal combination of chip maker, device manufacturer, and software stack provider exemplifies the maturity and the potential of TSN capabilities and its readiness for being extended from wired to wireless networks. The wireless TSN will liberate standards-based, scalable, and highly flexible applications that are realizing Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) everywhere.

The joint effort shows great promise that focuses on working on a truly unified and high-performance network infrastructure permitting all types of traffic to coexist. The development, one of the most complete applications of CC-Link IE TSN among the CLPA ecosystem, integrates CC-Link IE TSN-certified products, Moxa’s TSN-enabled switches, Intel’s latest generation of processor, 11th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processors, and Intel I120 TSN-enabled platforms. In addition, the application is developed by port GmbH, who has one of the industry’s first CC-Link IE TSN Class B-certified Master stacks and can demonstrate PROFINET capabilities over TSN through the first PROFINET CC-D remote station.

“As one of the pioneers in developing TSN standards, Moxa committed to collaborating with key industry players and customers to accelerate a unified network infrastructure for communications at all levels including all kinds of industrial devices and protocols running on top of it,” said Zico Lee, deputy general manager of Moxa Networking. “Working closely with Intel and port GmbH, we’ve achieved another milestone for advancing the development of TSN to the next stage as burgeoning consensus shows that TSN and wireless capabilities should combine to digest and react to data from multiple systems in real-time.”

The unique proposition of the solution is the feasibility for the framework to integrate devices and protocols such as CC-Link IE TSN by CLPA, PROFINET over TSN (PROFINET CC-D), EtherCAT over TSN, and the upcoming OPC UA FX. There is also a neutral middleware developed for all kinds of industrial protocols over TSN to deliver synchronous communications between sensors, PLCs, and actuators, which are used in various industrial applications.

“Moxa’s solution using TSN and real-time features on Intel Architecture Processors will enable the level of determinism required by Intelligent Industrial Edge systems where data is extracted, analyzed and actions applied real time. Using standard Ethernet based solutions accelerates digital transformation to Smart Factories, thus lowering total costs of ownership,” said Sunita Shenoy, senior director of Industrial IoT Platforms, Intel.

“With TSN, there is finally an Ethernet-based technology available that can connect all kinds of devices on the factory floor using standardized Ethernet TSN infrastructure devices overcoming proprietary systems,” said Marcus Tangermann, chief technology officer, port industrial automation GmbH. “TSN infrastructure components have better knowledge about all data streams within the network, which allows sophisticated planning of network traffic.”

“The industrial Ethernet and networking expertise that Moxa brings to the industry has helped enable higher performance for precise control in manufacturing applications now and in the future, as well as higher bandwidth and real-time communications that empower evolving technologies such as edge computing, industrial AIoT, and machine vision for smart manufacturing,” said Eason Lin, senior director of Advance Product Development, Orisol, which is a world-leading company for manufacturing equipment that produces footwear, as well as an automation solution provider, and a software and smart manufacturing solution service provider. “The collaboration announced today has also got us excited about the possibility of expanding our TSN applications to a wireless horizon.”

TSN is a future-proof solution that improves determinism and reliability in industrial Ethernet-based communications across vertical markets. When it creates accurate time synchronization across a network and traffic prioritization, users can combine many types of traffic on a single network with no loss of performance. Moreover, the solution also supports time-critical, control-related tasks and improves the transparency of how information is processed to support quality and output. With the advent of the new paradigm of 5G and Wi-Fi 6/7 connectivity, it is now possible to expand deterministic communications over wireless networks.

Multiprotocol Support (PROFINET, EtherNetIP und EtherCAT) for MCU STM32F, G, H, L Serie from ST Microelectronics

STM32 Logo
Multi-Protocol-Hardware-SoM-portGmbH

port extends the connection of the SoM modules (Stack on Module) to the STM32 MCU family from ST Microelectronics. With the firmware extension “µGOAL”, all derivatives of the STM32F, STM32G, STM32L and STM32H families can now be connected to the SoM (Stack on Module) via SPI. The user is now able to offer PROFINET (incl. MRP), EtherNetIP (incl. DLR) and EtherCAT for all named derivatives.

The firmware extension µGOAL describes a software package that enables the integration of the SoM module in applications without using a complete GOAL framework platform. As a result, for example. 8 bit CPUs with 2KB RAM can also be connected via SPI with the multi-protocol support technology SoM (Stack on Module). This makes it possible to enable low-cost or low-performance CPUs to be integrated into PROFINET, EtherNetIP and EtherCAT environments quickly and easily. µGOAL mimics the required functionality from the GOAL framework, which is specifically required by the application controller framework. It is configurable in a number of ways to ensure compatibility with a wide variety of destinations. Most of the CCM-specific examples for fieldbus applications can be reused without modification.

By using the module, no investment costs in the form of licenses are necessary. The module is cUL / CE certified. The PROFINET, EtherNetIP and EtherCAT protocols are “PRE-Certified” and therefore easy to integrate.

An extensive tool chain such as the ICE (Industrial Communication Explorer - is included free of charge) and the ICC (Industrial Communication Creator - optionally available) make integration much easier.

For simple testing, port GmbH offers EVAL kits based on the STM32F4 or STM32F7.

Software stack and SoM for the development of CC-Link IE TSN products

CC-LinkIE TSN Logo

Software stack and SoM for the development of CC-Link IE TSN products

An engineering company that specialises in industrial real-time data communication has developed two alternatives for CC-Link IE TSN products: a software stack (master/slave) reduces in-house development time and costs for the component manufacturer while an embedded system on module (SoM) can directly expand existing platforms.

Founded in 1990, port industrial automation GmbH based in Halle/Saale is committed to industrial real-time communication in all sectors. More than 500 product and system developers worldwide use MCU middleware, libraries, cores, protocol stacks, drivers, tools and development services from port to successfully place their products on the market.

Since the beginning of CANopen, the company has primarily relied on multi-protocol solutions, working in collaboration with market drivers from the European and US automation industries. Today, port focuses on the Industrial Ethernet protocols in their many forms and that is why, in June 2018, it joined the CC-Link Partner Association (CLPA) in order to support its latest Industrial Ethernet technology CC-Link IE TSN which combines gigabit bandwidth and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).

“port mainly serves industrial markets such as factory automation, logistics automation, sensor technology and the process industry and our real-time communication solutions cover the whole communication chain. CC-Link IE TSN provides an interesting technology platform which enables data from sensor to interface ‘IT’ to be displayed safely and represents an important addition to our portfolio”, says Dietmar R. Franke, CEO/CFO of port industrial automation. “We will continue to develop the company by focussing on TSN as we will fully support the whole topic of ‘Time-Sensitive Networking’ with a variety of products.”

The product range for CC-Link IE TSN currently includes a software stack that contains the tools required to configure, manage and install the new open specification. A decisive advantage of the stack solution is its hardware independence. The stack is ported to the relevant hardware platform in a consistent format and already contains the TSN features that are supported according to IEEE standards. In addition, there are appropriate configuration and management tools.

Moreover, port has developed a hardware product for CC-Link IE TSN in the form of an embedded system on module (SoM) which can be used as an add-on or expansion board for existing systems. “In other words, customers who are currently using a platform that offers a serial peripheral interface (SPI) can also add CC-Link IE TSN to their platform via this interface”, says Franke.

While the licensing of port’s CC-Link IE TSN stack is aimed at customers who will then be able to optimise their development effort for larger quantities, the company  also wants the embedded module to offer a CC-Link IE TSN option for companies which produce very small quantities. Franke sees opportunities for the SoM alternative for mechanical engineering in particular: “This fully integrated SoM alternative is particularly suitable for manufacturers who make more specific products such as certain gateways or I/Os with small annual production runs because all the customer has to take care of is the integration of the hardware. However we also offer that as a service for the CC-Link IE TSN system.”

port GmbH changes its name

Logo port

The port GmbH changes its name. The "port Gesellschaft für computergestützte Automation mbH" becomes "port industrial automation GmbH"

Since 1990, the company port is active in the area of real-time communication and has earned worldwide a reputation and brand. Port started with CANopen in 1994 and continues to expand its portfolio of protocol stacks and tools for PROFINET, EtherNetIP, EtherCAT, POWERLINK and CC-Link / TSN. In addition to LINUX, a variety of platforms from STMicroelectronics, RENESAS, TI, Infineon, Spansion, Analog Devices, Cypress, Microchip, Freescale, NXP, Marvell and many more are supported. With GOAL, port has released a middleware for multi-protocol solutions, which facilitates the use of real-time communication technologies.
With this strategy since 2011, the turnover of port has more than tripled ...
Dietmar R. Franke CEO of port: "In addition to the business segment of “Stacks and Tools for CANopen, PROFINET, EtherNet / IP, EtherCAT, POWERLINK and CC-LINK / TSN", the business segment "customer-specific developments and OEM solutions " has been very well established. Since 2019, we also have been offering our customers embedded hardware solutions in order to provide low-cost customers with a cost-effective way to "IoT and Industry 4.0 solutions". With this new business, we will at least double sales of port in the next 3 to 5 years. "
Since port's sales are growing faster, especially outside of Germany and since the new business segment "embedded solutions" will significantly boost international growth, the shareholders have decided to internationalize the company name as well.
From now on, port will be known as "port industrial automation GmbH" based in Halle / Saale

Protocol library PROFINET RT1-CCB und EtherNet/IP as one Package – including Design-Tool Support

Port combines the so far separately offered protocol libraries for PROFINET and EtherNet/IP under GOAL into one package. Both protocols run on top of the middleware GOAL, jointly enabling port.de customers for standard compliant PROFINET and EtherNet/IP communication. Everything is available out-of-the-box and compliant to the latest Conformance Test Software by ODVA and PNO (Profibus.com). Accordingly, the customer's application can support PROFINET or EtherNet/IP out of one project.

The including Design-Tools support the customer setting-up the objects in the libraries and in creating the corresponding EDS Files (EDS and GSDML). The middleware GOAL is the corresponding connector resp. anchor to the specific hardware and provides the real-world hooks to the hardware and to the environment while the protocol libraries implement the communication protocol itself and take comfort in the services, provided by GOAL. While GOAL seems to be rather a complication - in the real world (and mean world) GOAL is the enabler to address and survive reality.

GOAL with PROFINET, EtherNet/IP supports the following targets:

  • Linux: using the eth0 (or any other ethx) and done
  • RZ Family by Renesas: RN/N-1D, RZ/N-1S RZ/N-1L und RZ/T1
    • RZ/N-1D: Dual Core A7 MCU + M3 Subsystem - GOAL runs in the M3 Sub system and the API is being mapped to the Linux Kernel
    • RZ/N-1S: Single Core A7 MCU + M3 Subsystem - GOAL runs in the M3 Sub system the Stack API are being mapped into the A7 Core - running ThreadX
    • RZ/N-1L: M3 MCU - GOAL runs in the M3 Sub system · RZ/T1: R4(F) MCU + M3 Sub system - GOAL runs in the M3 Sub system

SoM IoT / Industry 4.0 modules for integration into LINUX environments

SoM IoT

PORT is expanding its SoM (System on Module) offering for real-time communication applications for use on Linux. The SoM IoT / Industry 4.0 modules offer PROFINET CCB and EtherNetIP on board and can now be easily integrated into LINUX Environments.

The SoM-IoT Real Time Communication Module provides a cost effective and easy to integrate communication solution. The market-leading real-time communication systems such as PROFINET CCB, EtherNetIP (EtherCAT and CANopen on request) are made available in just one module.

An extensive range of tools for management, integration and design drastically reduce development and integration times. With an integrated update service you always stay up to date.

The SoM-IoT Real Time communication module is prepared for use with various Ethernet ports such as RJ45, Mini RJ45 (IP20 applications) as well as M12 or M8 (IP54 applications). So the PHYs and the transformers are already available on board on the SoM. So only the SoM module and the corresponding Ethernet connectors have to be integrated on the host module.

The SPI of the SoM-RIN32M3 module is supposed to connect the module to the external application processor. Due to the independence between the Module Clock and the clock of the external application processor, the serial transmission with the SPI interface in asynchronous mode is performed by 3 module pins.

The application controller as SPI master determines the SPI communication mode. The SPI data format can first be switched between MSB and LSB. The number of bits in each transmission can be changed to any number from 8 to 16 or to 20, 24 or 32 bits. The communication is based on a 128-byte transfer buffer that can transport multiple requests.

The communication is based on a cyclic scheme in which process data can be transmitted cyclically with each request of the application control. Non-real-time communication (RPC) uses the same transport, but processing is decoupled from real-time communication. Thus real-time data can be exchanged independently of function calls of the API.

system requirements

The SoM works with any Linux system that provides an SPI interface as well as an I²C interface via the kernel. Furthermore, high precision timers are needed.

evaluation

PORT offers a SoM EVAL platform which can be tested together with a Raspberry PI under LINUX. The SoM Module EVAL board has a PMOD / ARDUINO interface and can thus be combined with other EVAL boards.

CANopen Protocol Stack for latest Renesas 32-Bit RX231 MCU Group

Düsseldorf, Halle  - October 22, 2015 - Renesas Electronics Europe, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and port GmbH today announced the availability of a highly efficient CANopen protocol stack for Renesas' smart 32-bit RX231 MCUs. Renesas ported the widely used and popular CANopen software stack in cooperation with its business partner port GmbH.

The Renesas RX231 series offers a family of devices with large on-chip SRAM of up to 64 KB and up to 512 kB of on-chip flash, paired with one Controller Area Network (CAN) interface, which is fully compliant with the CAN 2.0B and the ISO11898-1 (standard and extended frames) standards, and is therefore well-suited to industrial and consumer applications requiring CAN interfaces.

The embedded CAN module on the RX231 includes 20 buffers, 16 of which can be programmed to be shared between receive and transmit functions, creating 2 receive FIFO's and a transmit FIFO. A powerful acceptance filter selects which messages to receive according to 16 receive rules allowing the user a great deal of flexibility in creating incoming message handling strategies. The CAN modules can interact with Renesas' RX CPU by using different interrupts such as reception complete, transmission complete, receive FIFO, transmit FIFO, and error interrupts.

"Amongst the other available industrial communication protocols, CANopen remains a market leader especially in the fields of industrial automation and medical applications where an easy manageable protocol with a small memory footprint for reliable low bandwidth communication is essential," said Bernd Westhoff, Manager of the Global RX Product Marketing team of Renesas Electronics Europe. "The widespread popularity of CANopen in those applications is supported by Renesas' latest 32bit RX231 MCU with embedded CAN interface. These RX MCUs, combined with the well-known CANopen stack supported by port GmbH, provide an excellent foundation for fast and smart development using the powerful embedded CAN interfaces."

The CANopen stack follows the strict and very efficient coding and documentation standards established by port GmbH. These standards result in a very small memory footprint (less than 19 KB Flash / 3 KB RAM) as well as a high execution speed and easily readable code. For easy implementation, port GmbH offers board support packages for the standard Renesas Starter Kits.

Further PORT GmbH offers CANopen training, integration workshops and "be up to date" service maintenance agreements.

The RX231 MCU Group with embedded CAN comes in 48-pin to 100-pin packages with on-chip flash memory of 128 KB to 512 kB and 32 KB to 64 KB of on-chip SRAM.

The RX231 MCU Group offers a maximum operating frequency of 54 MHz. As part of the enhanced RXv2 CPU core architecture, the RX231 incorporates an on-chip 32-bit multiplier, single-precision floating-point unit (FPU) and a 32-bit enhanced barrel shifter for dramatically improved operation processing performance.

CANopen Source Code Library

The CANopen source code library Master/Slave contains the services of the CANopen CiA-301 V4.2 and CiA-302 standard including LSS. The library has been fully ANSI-C coded, and hardware specific interfaces have been placed in separate driver packages (also available in ANSI-C source code). This facilitates adaptation to different systems. The scope of delivery for the CANopen Source Code Library includes one driver package for one CPU and one CAN controller. Further information is available at: http://www.port.de/en/products/canopen/software/ansi-c-canopen-library.html
