Already since 1997 port GmbH offers it's CANopen protocol software for the operating system Linux. The universal »can4linux« CAN device driver was developed to accomplish this. Meanwhile the use of Linux for embedded systems has now been established. Thanks to many adaptations made we find can4linux based CAN / CANopen applications not only on Intel platforms with an SJA1000 CAN controller, but also in devices with Freescale, Atmel, and Analog Devices processors.
Since kernel version 2.6.25, a new CAN driver is held directly in the kernel. This SocketCAN called driver uses the network infrastructure based on the Berkeley socket API. Since 2009, port GmbH offers its CANopen Library in a version with direct SocketCAN support. The first customers have already successfully used this version. In the field of intelligent control systems Linux and graphical user interfaces written with the Qt toolkit are getting more and more followers. We can offer you code examples for such applications.

port GmbH is already known as supplier of technology for communication software and in electric drives. Now another customer is trusting on the company's competence in a extensive project. To be flexibly as possible, at different communication protocols mapped with a broadly common hardware, the manufacturer of motion controllers and drives decided to the FPGA-based solution »Port Unified Data Interface« (PUDIN) from port. Whether EtherCAT, CANopen or POWERLINK: Only one basic hardware with a FPGA as the core represents a unified hardware and software interface via a DP-RAM. This universal communication module abstracts the specifics of each bus protocol, so the customer can concentrate fully on its core competencies in the control of motors. For the newly introduced plug-in »1SI CANopen extension module« for the Siemens SIMATIC ET200S I/O system the port GmbH CANopen Configuration Manager can be used for the CANopen network configuration.
CANopen configuration is made by importing a provided EDS file into the CANopen configuration software tool. The necessary information for configuring the module into the ET200S Distributed I/O System is present in the SIMATIC Step7 tool and will not have to be downloaded separately in order to perform PLC configuration. After the configuration is finished, the CANopen network configuration can be uploaded to and stored in the Profibus/Profinet PLC or the ET200S I/O System CPU. If the 1 SI CANopen Module has to be replaced by another module, the previously stored configuration can be downloaded to the new module. The communication can then be restarted without any unnecessary delay. The change of modules can be performed with power still on. To perform upload/download of configuration, a function block is provided.

The PCI boards PCIL manufacturered by JANZ AG equipped with one or two CAN controllers can now be used with the can4linux device driver under the Linux operating system. Check out the latest trunk at SourceForge.
This opens the door to be used in CANopen or J1939 projects with port's protocol stacks and tools.
