MCP2510

By using the MCP2510 with SPI as external CAN controller it leaves most of the I/O of the microcontroller intact for other interfacing. (Not supported yet by port.) The MicrochipTechnologyInc MCP2510 is a Full Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol controller implementing CAN specification V2.0 A/B. It supports CAN 1.2, CAN 2.0A, CAN 2.0B Passive, and CAN 2.0B Active versions of the protocol, and is capable of transmitting and receiving standard and extended messages. It is also capable of both acceptance filtering and message management. It includes three transmit buffers and two receive buffers that reduce the amount of microcontroller (MCU) management required. The MCU communication is implemented via an industry standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) with data rates up to 5Mb/s.

MCP2515

The MCP2515 is pin and function compatible with the MCP2510 and also includes upgraded features like faster throughput, databyte filtering, and support for time-triggered protocols. Features:

• 18-pin package PDIP/SOIC or 20-pin LEAD TSSOP
• Two receive buffers with prioritized message storage
  • Six 29-bit filters
  • Two 29-bit masks
• Data byte filtering on the first two data bytes (applies to standard data frames)
• Three transmit buffers with prioritizaton and abort features.
• High-Speed SPI(TM) Interface (10 MHz): - SPI modes 0,0 and 1,1
• One-shot mode ensures message transmission is attempted only one time
• Clock out pin with programmable prescaler: - Can be used as a clock source for other device(s)
• Start-of-Frame (SOF) signal is available for monitoring the SOF signal: - Can be used for time-slot-based protocols and/or bus diagnostics to detect early bus degredation
• Low power CMOS technology:
  • Operates from 2.7V - 5.5V
  • 5 mA active current (typical)
  • 1 µA standby current (typical) (Sleep mode)
• -40 to +125°C operating temp.
